Politicians most concerned to win voters' support

I think it is easy to assume that when a politician says something like "Those evil oil companies are conspiring against the public" or "Big Oil is profiteering" that the politician is just a dim bulb who doesn't understand the nature of reality.

I think this kind of statement is completely separate from whatever the politicians' actual understanding of the subject may be. Whatever he may know about up/downstream oil business or any energy business is far less important to him than getting & keeping voter support. He knows that the public is suspicious of all big business, especially oil companies. Rising oil/gas prices are widely seen by the public as likely to be the result of some sort of underhanded collusion. So it becomes an easy choice for a politician, demagogically speaking, to point accusingly at oil companies/energy companies and call for investigations, controlling legislation, windfall taxes, etc. He/she is just playing the game. Just saying whatever it takes to get votes.
---- In my opinion, believing that politicians really believe what they say is naive. Unless one were to say "I will say anything at all to get votes and keep myself in power". If one were to say that, I would believe it.
