That's actually an interesting question(!). If we went to a single payer system, eliminating the (insurance) middle man and reducing the payment systems from over 200 to just one, would the independent MD practitioner have a better chance of making it in the marketplace?

I suspect that yes he/she would... it would flatten the competitive playing field.
