I think if you study the objective history (as opposed to the American Cold War histories), you find the Russians carried 80% of the load of defeating the Germans, and the only reason we came in at Normandy at all was to prevent the Russians from controlling all of Europe post conflict.

The Normandy invasion was the first move in the Cold War.
