When it came to application-level benchmark performance, CRW Labs found the Cyrix 6x86MX processor to be almost untouchable, outperforming both the K6 and Pentium II processors in all but one category. The 6x86MX found itself in first place overall by a 15 percent margin. The AMD K6 also did well overall, finishing ahead of the Intel Pentium II by a narrow margin.

Performance differences between the K6 and 6x86MX were negligible in Adobe PageMaker and Lotus WordPro tests, with Cyrix's chip ahead in both. In its only first-place finish, the Pentium II managed a slender victory over the Cyrix chip in the Corel Draw test.

Cyrix ran away with tests involving Microsoft applications, especially in Excel and PowerPoint duels, where its nearest rival was behind by 10 percent or more. Cyrix also made off with the Lotus Freelance title by a similar margin.

I guess these were real world benchmarks unlike other more synthetic benchmarks.
