Well, don't be too sure. The Republicans have given the voters very little to get excited about in the past few years. Tax cuts are fine, but without spending cuts it is just a shell game. Iraq remains a disaster for both the President and for the republicans who might have to run on his policy (or openly oppose him) next year.

Can you imagine a Republican convention in a year's time if things don't change, with Mr. Bush trying to rally the troops to his view of Iraq and a nominee recognizing that he has to distance himself from this policy or lose for certain? This won't look like the Bush Senior/Reagan convention in 1988.

People are not stupid if they weigh their perceptions about the direction of the Country and then vote either to continue that direction or move in a new one. They may not like the new direction particularly, but if it is preferable to the alternative, they select it.

That is what happened in 2006. Right now, 2008 is firmly in the democrats hands. The moderate republicans who visited the President last week understand the danger. With 2/3 of the Senate seats up for election next year in republican hands, the democrats won't lose one the way things stand now. The republicans could lose two or three. The house....much greater danger.

You do see this, don't you GZ? Not everyone in the Country sees things as you do....most are tired and frustrated with Iraq, primarily.....and that will drive votes...unless things change dramatically in the next year.
