Does one still need to install chip set drivers on a new motherboard when using XP?

I just installed an old AMD m/board with W98SE and it reminded me I needed to install/reinstall certain parts of the set of chip set drivers for this board.

On the other hand last week I installed XP (SP2) on an Intel motherboard with the D865 chip set and no error messages popped up and everything worked, including USB ports.

My assumption is that since W95 Windows, increasingly, already has and installs the proper drivers for most chip sets. Plus, m/board manufacturers use certain well known chip sets so it is highly probably that the drivers for them are included in XP.

Is this correct? Or, does one need to be mindful of the date of manufacture of certain newer chip sets that were not available when XP (SP2) was written?

The m/board I referenced with the D865 chip set has on-board video and LAN and I had to get and install drivers for each of these 2 functions. In my case, these drivers were easily found on the Intel and Realtek web sites. The driver for the modem was generic and included in Windows.

So, when a web site warns about loading chip set drivers, is this still needed? If so in what instances and why? Thanks....

There are, of course, considerations to be aware of if one attempts to take a present windows installation and transfer its hard drive to a different computer that has a different chip set. Here are a couple of links furnished by COW on how problems inherent in this reinstall procedure might be handled.

Thanks for your attention to this long post. Dick.....
