Taiwan memory module suppliers see tight NAND flash supply from Samsung

Josephine Lien, Taipei; Esther Lam, DIGITIMES [Monday 14 May 2007]

While seeing NAND flash supply from Samsung Electronics is lagging demand, memory-module customers at Samsung are also seeing a rising threat from Kingston Technology in China as the memory-module maker obtains sufficient capacity back up from Toshiba at competitive costs.

News regarding the shortage has been circulated for a while, as hinted at by Samsung's optimistic outlook over NAND flash demand during its previous investor conference and analyst events. The Korea-based memory-maker has reiterated that demand for NAND flash is filling from all sorts of consumer electronics including digital music players, handsets and portable media players (PMPs), which result in a boost in high-density NAND flash demand. The company has also warned that slight shortages will be seen during late 2007.

The situation for those who land NAND flash chips from Samsung Electronics is aggravated as Toshiba keeps offering competitive pricing for its customers. Thanks to the competitive cost that Toshiba offers, Kingston is becoming more aggressive over its deployment at China, which puts further pressure on Samsung-supplied customers.
