By the logic of this diatribe, increasing gasoline use efficiency only encourages people to drive more, which is a non sequitur because people do not necessarily have anyplace else to go. No, with higher CAFE standards people will get where they need to go while burning less fuel. This means refined oil products will last longer, not a bad idea unless you are trying to profit from a scarce commodity. Using less fuel also means people will have a bit more money left to buy other things, some of which might be made right here in the USA.

The C&D article also suggests the benefit will not accrue now, but only in the future. Well, by the time you read this far, the future is already here. Let's leave a little oil and gas for the kids, and cut the rate of air pollution increase at the same time.
