Certifying process for 802.16e Wave 2 products delays to Dec 2007 or Jan 2008

Irene Chen, Taipei; Steve Shen, DIGITIMES [Wednesday 16 May 2007]

Efforts by Taiwan-based network-equipment makers to develop WiMAX CPE (customer premise equipment) products that will comply with the 802.16e Wave 2 (MIMO 802.16e Wave 2) standard could be affected due to the postponement of WiMAX Forum's certifying process to December 2007 or January 2008 from mid-2007 as originally planned, according to sources at Taiwan makers.

Since 802.16e has emerged as the mainstream WiMAX technology, most Taiwan makers claimed that they have completed the development of 802.16e Wave 2 products, the sources noted.

The postponement would also cause a wait-and-see attitude among telecoms services providers on their procurements of WiMAX equipment, the sources added.

Additionally, the WiMAX Forum has also delayed the certifying process for 802.16e Wave 1 products to June/July 2007 from January 2007 as set previously, the sources noted.
