Webster you should know better, If you have the certs you claim....

"I tried vocal tech and Quarterdecks webtalk and both were fun but tied to a specific network based on IRC servers. It's close to chat connected to a port of some chat server. We all know different
chats can not link together, consider a unix chat server and AOL never the two shall meet, but fun all the same."

Vocaltec's Iphone uses IRC software on dedicated servers to display all of the people that are online. They also have a method of connecting using a server that does not display who is online...by typing in an address. On need not ever display or be displayed on the public servers. Once any connection is established it is an IP to IP connection using UDP with RTP riding on top. Ihpone 5 which has just been released is H.323 compliant, wich means it will talk to any other H.323 compliant app. This includes MS Netmeeting, Voxtel and the Intel "Iphone" applications. THe connection enables not only audio and video, but digital conferencing such as a "White Board" real time text, file transfer, and even application sharing.

True the online directories are different. Intel's directory is Web based. MS uses their Universal Locator Service. Vocaltec uses their own network of DEDICATED servers that use IRC software for displaying people online...but otherwise have nothing to do with IRC and/or the IRC network !! These servers DO NOT EVER carry the actual packetized voice data. Once again, this data is carried over the network... IP address to IP address !

Got it "network guru" ??

In the latest version of Vocaltec's Iphone, an HTML based "Global Online Directory" is used that can access the Vocaltec addressing servers as well as the adressing servers for Netmeeting, Voxtel, and Intel... literally one can call and talk to anyone with any of the apps that are H.323 compliant....

so much for your baloney about "never the two shall meet".

The much promised, but never delivered, Digiphone 2.0 app either does not do these things or offers extra cost modules for what everyone else considers basic functionality. Of course it is hard to say, as they have not (a YEAR after promising to ship the product) made it available for testing...

"says voice quality is astounding"

I have tried 35 different Net Phones. Digiphone has without a doubt the worst sound of any. Though you direct us to one article that mentions good quality, if anyone is interested, I can direct them to at least 10 that say it is horrible.. write me if you are interested.

"A bear to set up the first time "

Strange, all of the other apps that I have used are extremely simple to set up. Just type in some info, and off you go. How many folks do you think will deal with the difficulty for the "rewards" of getting a substandard result ??

Webster, can't you please, just once, write something that is even semi accurate !?!?
