Look how much crap Bill Maher took when he said that the 9/11 terrorists were brave. Of course, they were evil and of course, they were wrong. But a coward doesn't do what they did. It was like WWII movies made during the war. Everyone depicted the Nazis and Japanese not only as evil, but as cowards. I think it detracts from our guys' victory if the enemy was a bunch of cowards. The movies of the 60s changed that concept.

Just because we believe somebody is evil does not mean he has no reason to be mad at us or that he is a coward. But politicians are playing to the folks who would consider them traitors if they said anything else.
