I don't know if you have compared their prices with their competitors. But they are at best marginally lower on "headline" items; often times on "blind items" much higher.

There is a reason why their margin is higher than their competitors; it's the marketing that you are falling for. The little smiley face dropping prices on a few key items.

Walmart is not a charitable organization. They are trying to suck every last penny of profit from your wallet. Just like every other retailer. I've dealt with their corporate office as well as the other big boxes... marketing (and a bit of efficiency) is the difference.

On average, it you walk out of Walmart with the same stuff you will pay a slightly lower price than you would at Target, but get far inferior merchandise; and pay higher than you would at Kmart (God Forbid you shop there!) with about the same stuff.

Walmart has reached it's zenith and started it's death spiral... count on it. Somebody else with a better marketing plan is going to kick their ass, and Walmart will be dead in the water because their stores will be old and tired and they won't be able to catch up. That's the way it works; always has, always will.
