Fewer people today really believe in life after death, in itself, perhaps a denial of our mortality. Well, if we cannot anticipate life after death, then we have to consider death. If we are no longer rewarded in heaven for our suffering, then suffering becomes purposeless in itself.

If denial is no longer possible, you can attempt to master death by challenging it, by rebelling against it (on behalf of life) while you are alive and healthy and then accept it with dignity when the "end" comes. That is not only possible, it has been achieved by many.

From love of life, one should desire a different death.
