I can answer this. Just out of HS, I used to train retarded people (young adults) to do basic functions like feed them self, dress them self, go to the toilet, brush their teeth, etc. These people had been warehoused all their lives and though capable of doing these things, had never been taught, and were used to having other people do them for them. They were also blind.

We used behavior modification techniques. We also used a technique that had the less retarded help their more retarded dorm mates learn the skills. It really accelerated our progress.

The higher functioning people gained self esteem and a degree of adulthood by helping their less able dorm mates. After all, they were doing the same job I was. Some of them actually "graduated" to assisted living facilities.
