Restrictions on immigration was later. So there was no reason for illegal immigration until the 1920s.

True. That is a big difference. The immigrants in those days were here for a new start. So that does skew the dynamics.

I can understand Z's viewpoint, I held it at one time. Heck, anyone with enough get up and go to travel hundreds or thousands of miles looking for work should be rewarded.

But, there can be too much of a good thing. Used to be, you could see a smooth gradient in the wages of the trades like carpentry. The closer you got to Brownsville, the lower the wages. That isn't true any longer, the system has gotten a lot more efficient in moving people around.
