Blair in frame to take over at World Bank
OUTGOING Prime Minister Tony Blair is a contender for the job of president of the World Bank, according to one of America's most respected economists.

The news comes after the board of the World Bank announced its under-fire president Paul Wolfowitz, who helped to arrange a pay increase and promotion for his partner, would resign at the end of next month.

The World Bank has traditionally been run by an American But Nobel prize-winning economist Joe Stiglitz, an ex-senior vice president at the World Bank, said Mr Blair, who is on his final tour of the US as Prime Minister, was in the frame.

He said: "He is one of the people that is clearly being discussed.

"Blair is clearly a political leader that has the kinds of connections that one needs, that would be useful as head of the institution. I wouldn't rule him out."
