SALE OF MOTOROLA MODEM UNIT MIGHT
AFFECT 56-KBPS STANDARD EFFORT

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Motorola Inc. appears ready to sell its
computer-modem business, a move that might influence the effort
to develop a common standard for modems that can process 56,000
bits of data per second.

Selling the modem unit "makes sense," said Gregory Geiling, an
analyst at J.P. Morgan Securities Inc, who estimated the value of
the business at roughly $200 million. "In my opinion this fits
very well" with what management has been doing in an effort to
re-energize the business, said Charles DiSanza, analyst at Gerard
Klauer Mattison & Co. "This is good news."
