I think I'd rather have a 15-20 watt mobile dual core, each with a 64-bit FPU/SSE unit than a 35-40 watt dual-core with a 128-bit FPU/SSE

Certainly. Now put yourself in the manufacturer's position and see how this looks from there: You aim to deliver this xx watt CPUs at the beginning of your process (or node) to meet Petz's needs and sell him such a cpu - and couple millions per quarter to others. However you don't stop there, but work power down in your process over the learning curve in the next two years or so. At one point you can fit the wide FPU into your power-envelope and deliver more peformance per the same watts your market is happy with to improve your competitive position.
1. Wouldn't it be a pity if you had not designed it in in the first place?
2. If you did, when would you start talking about it?
