I bought a major (for me) position in Vallourec after they announced weaker than expected guidance for 2007. They seem to under-promise and then beat their estimates by a wide margin year after year. Maybe it’s part of bon ton. They make seamless tubes which are used mainly for oil and gas drilling and power industry. In the high end of the market they only have two competitors: Tenaris and Sumitomo. Barriers to entry are very high. Premium products are used in difficult environments (unusual temperatures, high pressure, corrosives, high mechanical stress) like in drilling at high depth or under water where cost of failure (environmental or cost of redoing) is high. I hope that at the end of this run up Vallourec’s chart will look like CommanderCricket’s stairway to heaven.
