I can chip in here. I'm reading a popular book on genetic engineering that briefly discusses DDT, as one of the the insect control chemicals that are rapidly losing out to genetically modified organisms, which can be targeted for a SPECIFIC pest. (including humans!)

From the book:

"Long lasting residues from DDT become concentrated as they move up food chains, often killing songbirds and other animals as well as insects. In the 60's, some of America's most spectacular native species including brown pelicans, peregrine falcons and bald eagles were driven to the brink of extinction when DDT products accumulated in their tissues and caused massive reproductive failures."

"The Hope, Hype and Reality of Genetic Engineering"

..a really excellent non-technical intro by a scientist in the field who doesn't take sides. Recommended by Micheal Crichton in appendix of his latest novel.
