On the radio, he said it definitely was to be produced. It's a different car than the Prius. The Prius doesn't average 150 mpg. The drive system is called "series hybrid" - all electric with a fuel powered, as needed generator.

The power is all electric, all the time. The tiny motor just runs the generator and charges the batteries. Curiously, it's the same size 3 cylinder engine I have in my 1988 Subaru Justy 4wd that gets 35-50 mpg, but it's all gas all the time. The Volt is a much larger, heavier car than my Justy.

I don't have a lot of faith in Detroit or GM, but it sounded encouraging. I hope they do it, and clean up, as gas just gets more and more expensive.
