Re: Backups - a real-life story

I was a consultant for a major bank for 3 1/2 years. They had a BIG application problem one day which caused the retail teller systems to be down for 1/2 day. They asked me to repair the damage and get them up and running.

By noon, I had the database repaired and system restored. I told the manager that we needed another 30-40 minutes for a backup. She made a decision that getting the tellers online was too critical and she would chance waiting until 5pm to take the backup. I told her, "You know, when you don't have a backup, that's when the system crashes!" Sure enough, 1 hour after going live, IT DID IT AGAIN!. They were down all day anyway and I got to do the fix all over again.

Moral of the story: if you want your data, back it up.
