Carter can't be blamed for the fall of the Shah, or the Arab oil boycott or the post Vietnam debt/deficits/inflation. Those were all happening during the Nixon-Ford years. That's what happens after a long costly war, the bill comes in. Just wait until GW Bush's deficits bill comes in. A huge mess to clean up, as big as post-Vietnam.

Carter was extremely good on diplomacy and the environiment/energy. He was also the only real christian presdient we've had in recent memory.

Plus, the Iran hostage crisis was what really hurt him, though he lauunched a daring rescue mission which, if it had succeeded, would have turned him from a victim into a hero.

There are many stories about Reagan's people sabotaging Carter's presidency by secretly arranging arms sales to Iran in exchange for holding onto the US hostages. If true, that would be typical of the rightwing.
