John, Thanks for all your reports and summaries. The treatment is better than the alternative, at present, and IMO, no one would forsake available treatment waiting for something better down the road.
Bhag, An excellent source for the presentations for ICAAC is available at: healthcg.com Then go to Daily Summaries from the ICAAC 97 Conference. I think the presentation you are interested in is "Immune System Reconstitution in HIV, by Joe Eron, M.D. and is available at healthcg.com Also, see the following for statistics on worldwide incidence of AIDS, . "The Epidemic is Far from Over" According to Peter Piot, of the Joint United Nations Program on AIDS, worldwide there are an estimated 8500 new HIV infections every day, half of them female and 1000 of them children. Dr. Piot described AIDS as now as common as malaria as a cause of death worldwide, with an estimated 1.5 million deaths annually. In his closing summary, Dr. Piot summed up the current situation with AIDS as being "very, very grim." "None of us could have predicted this 15 years ago." "The AIDS epidemic," he continued, " is far, far from over. And we will have to cope with it for many generations to come." Pilot initiatives are being planned to try to more broadly distribute AIDS related therapies around the world. (From Bruce Polsky, Toronto Plateau: AIDS Update from 37th ICAAC, Day 1) healthcg.com
IMO, your analogy comparing AIDS treatment to the treatment for diabetes is appropriate. There is no cure for diabetes yet either, and strict adherence to the available treatment is critical. |
