dan, that's the advantage of dlt backups.
you shut the system down for minutes to make a disk to disk copy of the data.
then you let the system come back up and the users are online.
you then dlt the copy you made in a few hrs....but the users were down only minutes.

Or you parallel the databases so that a transaction post on two separate servers. then you dlt tape backup the duplicate copy and the users are done zero. and when the backup is finished then all the transactions that happen catch up.

Some applications like mail do realtime backups online with no effect to users.
I had one of the most quality oreinted customers come in and audit our group this summer.
He was amazed at the lack of effort required to have a backup system that was the best he had ever seen.

in the era of 24 a day 7 days a week backups can still be done
with zero user downtime.
I didn't even talk about the raid 5 I have and the hot swappable drives that will also ensure only minutes of downtime if disaster strikes and no lost of data. HAd to use these hot swappables once when memory fail in a server. Users were down only 18 minutes.

I developed these back up strategies yrs ago and my computer operations group practices TQM and JIT to ensure that continuous improvements happen.
if it happens in hrs I want it to happen in minutes and if it happens in minutes ai want it to happen in seconds.
I want zero downtime in primetime and instantaneous response time.
Needless to say I was a user for 16 yrs before I became head of MIS for the last 15-17 yrs........ggggggggg
I approach everything from users perspective.
