Actually the Shah was trying to modernize his country and among other things broke up the big landholdings of the families which produced the mullah class - one of whom was Khomeini. At one time the Khomeini family owned an entire town and all the land around it. Under his reign women had social freedom and secular education and industrial development was promoted.

Sure he was a dictator and playboy. But he was far milder than the current government which stones women, hangs young gays, persecutes Bahais and Zoroastians. Furthermore he was pro-western, not an enemy of America like the current regime.

I also consider Carter's reaching out to the Soviet Union for domestic political purposes treasonous.
