Don... that's not a good list.

1) Surge protection is expensive and solves a non-issue for most people.

2) What's a firewall? By most definitions, most people surf without, safely. I surf completely without much protection many times a day, from my mobile phone. Is it safe? I don't care and I never heard about anybody having problems doing what I do. There are much worse things you can do.

3) Neglect antivirus and antispyware. You cannot always fix a broken security system by inspection. The most secure systems are usually not running antivirus and antispyware.

5) Who cares about fragmentation?

7) That's why my wife loves her laptop - she may click on everything without getting into trouble.

What about these:

- Neglect security updates.
- Test your backups. I have seen too many users unhappy about finding out, that CD-R's don't always keep data readable or that their backup system hasn't been running for a while.
- Use Internet Explorer. It enables activex controls and COM access, which means that a security problem can quickly escalate to a major problem.
- Give yourself administrative rights on your Windows and maybe even disable Vista UAC. This is the best way to ensure, that malware is able to infect your computer well.
