Actually Saddam was trying to modernize his country and among other things broke up the big landholdings of the families which produced the mullah class. Under his reign women had social freedom and secular education and industrial development was promoted.

Sure he was a dictator and playboy. But he was far milder than the current government which stones women, hangs young gays, persecutes Sunnis, Shiites, Christians, and Jews. Furthermore he was pro-western, not an enemy of America like the current regime.
