In the field of communications, we have wired and wireless; using satellite, copper or fiber optics cable, and broadcasting airwaves via antenna. The concepts are using a carrier frequency to distinguish the many channels. This then added multplexers, QAM and time or code division multiple access technology. Lately, data compression is also included to have more transmission capability. Data compression using repeated words to condense the analog and digital codes.

One of the difficulties was the Mpeg4/AVC codec, which only store differences and not repeated codes. So repeated codes only need to be stored once, the differences are superimposed on the repeated frames.

But Mpeg4 has four or more profiles(baseline, extended, main and high). It is profiles of resolution and color depth. baseline being for cellphone with 320x240 pixel resolution; and high profile is for HD(high definition) format. But unfortunately, Mpeg4 is still evolving with more data compression schemes. And most of the set-top boxes are yet to be capable of universal deployment until Mpeg4 codec can have subsets to handle all the differences of satellite Mpeg4, cable(broadcasting) Mpeg4 or Camcorder Mpeg4. They are not yet interchangeable, even with cellphone Mpeg4.

One way to handle all the future Mpeg4 is to have a very large Mpeg4 codec with many subset to handle new data compression schemes. Until then some companies will have troubles keeping the set-top boxes working properly.
