The fact that the Viet Cong never fully recovered was of some significance, and could have been of massive significance if some things had worked out differently. The South's government became more secure over time after that point, and they were not going to be overthrown by any sort of revolution in the South. So the North tried conventional invasion.

The first time they tried an invasion was when most Americans where out of the country, but not all. It was soundly defeated. Most of the ground forces opposing it where ARVN, but they relied on Americans for air support and resupply.

The next time the north invaded we were no longer providing resupply or air support and the south fell. We wouldn't have taken many casualties from providing air-support, and probably would have had no casualties from providing weapons and supplies, but congress cut the government in the South off anyway and it fell.

If we do manage to get the government in Iraq to the level that the government of South Vietnam was at the time of the Jan '73 cease fire, then things would be pretty ok in Iraq. Iraq isn't likely to face massive invasion. In theory Iran could try, but I don't think its likely to happen, and the invasion would take horrendous casualties from our air power. Although I suppose we could turn away from Iraq the same way we turned away from South Vietnam, and refuse to rearm them or supply them with air support against an invasion. I hope that doesn't happen.
