FWIW, this chap, Charles Hughes, is (IMO) one of most astute programming geeks I've found on SI. Here's his take on Y2K:

RE: shark's teeth -- a few years ago, here in the North Bay area (around Point Reyes), a diver got molested by a Great White. As the story goes, the shark had him about half-swallowed but spit him out. Now that's an experience! Likely his scars are his own "shark's tooth necklace". I think there's more truth than legend to this one -- maybe Gottfried knows more about it.
