I spent 4 years working the back country...3 yrs at that very spot.
the lake is around 9000' & Paintbrush Divide, above & to the east, is another +2000' up. one year I was working the pass & a 78 year old Swiss man (alone) came chugging up the more difficult approach (Paintbrush Canyon) on a day hike, all +20 miles, +5000' or so. though he did a piss poor imitation of Julie Andrews singing, he was agile dancing about the hard rock lichen & he was having fun. I guess he would not ever be deterred from whatever he wanted to do, much less given in to the infirmities of old age (back in those days about 1/3 of the back country visitors were foreign).
I will never forget that one day.
