Is American Idol Finale Worth Watching?

By Joe Reality on American Idol

Simon_thumbThanks to an original song that much more fit one singer's style than the other, there isn't much suspense over who should win American Idol 6 tonight. As Simon Cowell told Jordin Sparks, "You just wiped the floor with Blake on that song." Even though Blake Lewis started strong, Jordin Sparks finished stronger, and the odds usually tend to favor who does well on the last song.

Many viewers are protesting that the original song was unfair to Blake Lewis, and it was, but American Idol producers can't be blamed this year, since they didn't select the song. Unless one blames them for having the American Idol songwriting contest in the first place, but that actually seemed like a good idea, even if it unfortunately for Blake Lewis resulted in a song being selected that wasn't really his style.

Even though Jordin Sparks appears to be the clear favorite to win and DialIdol.com shows her with a large lead in the voting, strange things can and do happen when it comes to American Idol voting. Viewers only have to look back one week to find an example of a surprise elimination. If Jordin Sparks' fans thought she had it in the bag and didn't vote continuously during the entire voting window, Blake Lewis could pull off an upset.

However, the even bigger reason to watch American Idol tonight is that the finale has become event television. Even when the Super Bowl seems to have a lopsided match-up, viewers still tune in to watch the commercials and the half-time show. In the past, American Idol has always proven that they can put on one heck of a half-time show. The question is can they top last year's surprise appearance by Prince. Early rumors seem to center around Green Day (via Star Magazine) and Brittney Spears (via Perez Hilton) possible performing on the show.

The other thing that American Idol viewers have to look forward to is the comedy skits. One could probably assume that it's almost a given that Sanjaya Malakar will be in a comedy skit involving his hair. It's also a good bet that some of the more memorable contestants from the auditions will be back. Personally, we're really hoping to see Sherman Pore given a chance to perform. The American Idol finale airs tonight on Fox from 8PM to 10PM Eastern Time.
