Don't be presumptuous. I work very hard every day, on a job I thoroughly enjoy. I take a few minutes off every now and then for entertainment purposes.

You can choose to look at the data with your eyes squinted, but the bare fact is that the life expectancy today is far greater than it was 100 years ago, virtually everywhere in the world. If it's true that at 60 our expected life remaining is no more than it was 100 years ago that's undoubtedly because only the very hardy made it to 60 then, while now virtually everyone does.

The reason why there is more cancer and heart disease now is that people are living long enough to get these illnesses. You have to die of something. I'll bet there was no heart disease among the NZ Maori in the good old days - because few of them made it to 30.
