NEW DELHI, May 23 India's private major Tata Group has planned to set up a plant to convert coal into diesel or crude oil.

The company says it will partner with South Africa's Sasol for the project. Sasol is the largest producer of motor fuel from coal.

A Tata spokesman said the proposed coal-to-oil project would result in annual import substitution benefits of about $25 billion for the country.

Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata recently discussed the project with the federal Finance Ministry, the planning panel and the prime minister's office to get their approval, as the project requires a large investment.

The proposal is with the Coal Ministry. Sasol has asked the Indian government to notify the project as an approved end-user for captive mining.

Tata also sought a clearance for a rapid investigation of select coal blocks that contain reserves of 1.5 billion to 2 billion tons, a Coal Ministry spokesman said.

Tats has demanded that the government reserve at least two sites for the construction of CTL plants and also wanted a system of incentives to promote the industry.

Sasol has hinted it could invest $6 billion in the proposed project.
