you're dealing with the Mayans here, and Mel's "vision" of the Mayans- which was roundly criticized by anthropologists, who said he made Mayan culture overly violent (duh!)

This is, at heart, an action/adventure chase movie- sort of Mad Max meets the Mayans? It's got gore, and sadism, but at bottom it's a simple chase movie. IMO

That said, it's a really good chase movie- at least the last part of the movie. Up to the ritual sacrifice part it's all just set up for the chase.
