Twelve reasons why WP is dead.

If you look back at the "last days" of other former stars such as Lotus 1-2-3, WordStar, VisiCalc, CPM you see the same patterns as with WordPerfect:

1) Sales figures go down (in the software industry this is KOD)

2) The product develops a small set of followers in deep denial

3) The public ignores much improved versions of the product

4) Loyal followers deny this is true.

5) Public is unmoved by susbtantial price/performance advantages

6) Loyal followers point out monopolistic practices of Microsoft

7) The value of the brand erodes continually (a year ago WP at $200M looked like a steal. Today the market is hardly willing to pay that much for the _entire_company_ Draw, Ventura and all).

8) Loyal followers say "if only we had better advertising"

9) Price of stock goes down

10) Loyal followers applaud because "it makes a takeover more likely"

11) Company starts making large bets on long shots

12) Loyal followers latch on the dream and sing undying praise (still waiting for Copland, IYKWIM)
