I know for a fact that hedge funds will circulate bogus stories to make stocks do what they want. A friend of mine was visiting his son, who runs one of the largest hedge funds in New York. He wanted to show his dad how it works, so they picked a stock, Ralph Lauren and proceeded to show him how they could pick up the phone, start a rumor and drive it right down. Nice, huh?
