Wayne, Liberals are not interested in American foreign policy failing. They are interested in it being handled competently and compassionately. Which is why the Clinton foreign policy was a huge success despite GOP attempts to bushwhack it. There is no substitute for competence, though Bush has tried several ersatz versions of "I Can't Believe It's not Competence."
As I've always maintained, a mixed economy is the only kind that really works. Capitalism doesn't work for building infrastructure, defense or scientific discoveries. Socialism doesn't work for building cars (does anyone want a Yugo or a Skoda?) or creating fashion or practical research and development (as opposed to purely scientific or basic research). I don't think even the diehards on either side of the economic spectrum would deny that a mixed economy works best. The question has always been what the mix should be.
I think a libertarian society will only exist in Tommy More's book, Utopia, or after Jesus returns. Many countries, including our own, Denmark (which has a freakin' monarchy <G>), Monaco, etc. are admirable for libertarian notions and institutions, but all eventually lean back to authoritarianism at some point. Big Brother is not just a dictatorial monster. He is a source of comfort for the great unwashed. |
