That's a sad article about nursing homes. My father spent his last 13 months in a facility like the lady in the article lives in. He shared a tiny bedroom with another man. No privacy at all, including shower time. The only fortunate thing in his case was the fact that he had chronic dementia. He thought he was in a hospital for a disease he imagined. He continually thought he had been there "a few weeks" and was very near getting to go home.

Today, my 90 year old mother is in assisted living. She's very ill with osteoporosis and 3 spinal fractures. Constant pain they can't do much for. Her room is private and has lots of her own personal belongings that would fit. She can't participate in any of the social things except an occasional bit of entertainment. It's very depressing as they take a dead body out of the place at least once a week. She is unable to eat most of what they fix and has no appetite. She's down from her "normal" 125 pounds to 93 now. She has given up and, although I see her several times a week and we talk on the phone 2-3 times a day, I can't help her. It's a terrible existence these seniors must endure. It's certainly not enjoyable to watch a loved one go through it.

At 70 years old right now, I'm buying "long term care" insurance for myself, as I know one day I'll need to be cared for in some say and I don't want it to burden my 2 kids.
