That's a well thought out concept about possible future competition. However, the microprocessor remains the single most expensive component of a PC, and just as important from the point of view of an Intel investor it is that it the high margin item. To get software written for future microprocessors, Intel must put out specifications that can be reversed engineered by competitors. That is the big disadvantage of an open system, compared to a company like Apple that makes hardware and writes it's own software, ie a mostly closed system. Despite this disadvantage,IMHO an open system has many advantages that make it vastly superior. It does open the door to copy cat chips, so Intel will have to run fast to stay ahead. A lead in microprocessors is absolutely critical, the other products are peripheral to the long term sucess of our investment in INTC.
