Subj: NVID International and EndoDynamics announce joint effort to replace Glutaraldeh
Date: 96-08-22 08:15:50 EDT

SARASOTA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 22, 1996--NVID
International (OTC BB:NVID) and EndoDynamics Thursday announced they
are teaming together in a joint research effort to replace
Glutaraldehyde with MicroSafe for high level disinfection of flexible
endoscopes.
MicroSafe is NVID's new environmentally safe non toxic liquid
disinfectant. Flexible G.I. endoscopes are used for non-invasive
upper and lower visceral examination of the gastro-intestinal tract.
Currently, Glutaraldehyde is an approved high level disinfectant
used for cleaning flexible endoscopes in the health care industry,
and poses extreme environmental and safety hazards for handling, fume
recovery and disposal in the hospital setting.
Glutaraldehyde has shown to act as a contact irritant and
allergen on the skin and respiratory tract. Inhalation of vapors can
cause nose, throat and lung irritation, headaches and nausea.
Adequate exhaust ventilation, and the use of protective equipment are
required to prevent skin contact and inhalation.
There is currently no suitable substitute for Glutaraldehyde as a
disinfectant for some medical instruments such as flexible fibre
optic endoscopes. "Demand for MicroSafe in this type of application
could be immense," said Marna Schirmer RN and director of Marketing
and Sales for EndoDynamics.
The research testing will utilize the current A.S.T.M. Standard
protocol of determining the efficacy of disinfection for reusable
medical devices (Simulated Use Test). The test bacterial that will
be used is Mycobacterium terrae, because published information shows
that this organism has comparable resistance to antimicrobials, as
also displayed by human tuberculosis strains of mycobacterium
tuberculosis. NVID's president Robert Bunte stated that, "If tests
prove this to be a suitable replacement for Glutaraldehyde, this will
be a tremendous relief for this industry by eliminating the current
handling hazards and further evidence of the wide market potential
for our disinfectant products."
