If it is -100 at the south pole and +100 in Az, it is mathematically correct to say the average temperature is 0. But it is physically meaningless. No serious scientist things a single global temperature is meaningful.

Nonsense. That is a trivial part of the debate on global warming, and AFAIK, no credible scientists debate that part.
