Tim Bradner compares Palin's AGIA to Murkowski's efforts over the past 4 years. Murkowski asked for a 45-year tax freeze on gas production, and a 30-year tax freeze on oil production. Palin asks for a mere 10-year tax-freeze on gas production only. I think both are unconstitutional, but Palin's 10-year promise would probably be honored by the legislature. OTOH, Murkowski's proposal was so unpopular that it wrecked the deal.

(Question: If they really want a tax freeze, why don't they put it to a statewide vote and amend the state constitution? Back in the early 1960s Minnesota did exactly that with the Taconite Amendment, which provided a 25-year tax break for developing low-grade iron ore. I still remember all the campaign signs: "VOTE YES, TACONITE AMENDMENT!". I never saw any signs that said "Vote No", but I hear that Hubert Humphrey and his ilk were against it.)

Will AGIA get Alaska its gas line?
Is Palin's gas deal any better than Murkowski's?
