Statistics from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have revealed that one in every 20 patients admitted to a hospital in the United States acquires an infection. In all, an estimated 2 million people annually are afflicted, and 100,000 people die. The key organisms responsible for the deaths include methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium difficile. Both are proliferating in drug-resistant strains.
