WORLDWIDE CHIP SALES IN AUGUST HIT $11.6 BILLION, A 15.3%, $1.5 BILLION HIKE FROM AUGUST 1996 SALES

SAN JOSE --- Continued strong sales in the Americas market pushed global semiconductor sales in August 1997 to $11.6 billion, a 15.3 percent or $1.5 billion increase over sales recorded in August 1996, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association's monthly Global Sales Report.

"This marks the fourth straight month of strong year-to-year growth for the semiconductor industry," said SIA President George Scalise. "Despite some seasonal sluggishness in the European and Japanese markets, all indicators suggest the global industry is growing as we start the fourth quarter."

As it has all year, the America's market showed the most dramatic year-to-year gains. August 1997 sales exceeded $3.85 billion, a 21.3 percent improvement over August 1996 sales of $3.17 billion. The year-to-year growth in the Asia-Pacific market was almost as high, 18.5 percent. Sales reached $2.57 billion compared to August 1996 sales of $2.17 billion.

The year-to-year growth was 15.8 percent in Europe and 5.8 percent in Japan. In Europe, August 1997 sales exceeded August 1996 sales by $310 million. In Japan, August 1997 sales were $145 million higher than August 1996.

The global sales data, compiled by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics organization, shows that August's sales were nearly identical to July 1997 sales in all four major chip markets. "This is particularly good news because sales stayed strong during the peak summer vacation season," Scalise said.

August 1997 sales were 1.8 percent higher than July 1997 sales in the Asia-Pacific market and rose 0.4 percent in the Americas market. In Europe and Japan --- where August sales traditionally decrease --- sales declined by 1 percent and 1.3 percent, respectively, compared to July 1997.

The global sales numbers represent a three-month rolling average of actual sales in the world's major chip markets. The complete list is attached.
