Lucius,

<It's Intels game to lose, not the competitions game to win.>

Let me start by saying I agree 100% with the statement above.

As for temporarily catching up, I see you are now saying "in the chips most used today". Let me remind you that when clone 486's caught up with Intel's 486's, they (486's)were by far the most popular cips being used. The point is that Intel already had the next processor (the Pentium) ready to go. The Pentium was just as extravagant as the PII-300 is now when the 486-66's and 486-100's were mainstream and Intel had been "caught" by their competitors.

As for your PII-300 price....you are way off. Sure many of these systems are selling for around $3999 but that's only becaue they are loaded with comparable leading edge components. You can get a very nicely equipped PII-300 from Gateway, Micron, or Dell (these are the three I have looked into) with a 17" monitor for right around $3000.

BTW, I will not be getting a PII-300 because I am not scheduld to replace my P120 until sometime next summer. By then I will happily pay $3000 for a 400+MHz Intel based PC. In the meantime, however, a Tilamook notebook my be in the cards if Santa is good to me <ggg>. BTW, at work we have been ordering notebooks like crazy. Many of our employees are using them with docking stations, thereby replacing their traditional desktop units. I'll let you know when I see a wave of Tilamooks come in.
