Just why can't the US fight a trade war and win I would like to know? What is wrong with supporting American middle class jobs through protectionism as the proponents believe? Geo. The answer is very simple. To save 10,000 manufacturing jobs the price of everything from China would rise by 25%. Is that a fair tradeoff? for who? We would save 10,000 jobs but how many others would we lose when people stop shopping and eating out at restaurants in response. Then of course there is this "little" issue of China financing our purchases at an incredibly low rate. Then of course if we slap a tariff on goods from China then more goods will come in from Vietnam, Brazil, etc. Mish
