Yes, and IMO in many SA countries (Equador included)elections are not the only method. There is the right leaning, the left and the military. The military uses force and is not necessarily aligned to either side.

The gold is there, but there is a political fight for control.
The chance for big return and a definite risk always go together.

In 71, I was in Quito when Castro came and gave a speech.
There was excitement. The military then rolled their tanks through the streets, wealthy and poor areas both, and simply turned the cobble stone streets to rubble. They displayed power.

My take is that although things have changed, anything is possible. When we sit up here it is not so obvious. R
