"Under the circumstances I'm not so sure checking them out was possible."

I am.

All reports indicate our allied forces were only one or two days out at most from the airport.

Escape was cut-off to the South and East overland. The North and West were out.

Air was the only way for large numbers of the fighters to escape --- and the US Air Force had total control of the air. They had to receive *permission* to fly their transports in. Our pilots report being 'amazed' when the direct order came down to allow Pakistani military transport in to evacuate.

(It was *exactly like* someone didn't want the world to see the dirty fingerprints of our 'ally' Pakistan on the Taliban and al Qaeda... and the 9-11 attacks.)

WHY *is that* do ya think?

Because already we didn't really care about the true perpetrators of the attacks (or their sponsors), but wanted to shift attention and blame to Saddam... where perhaps greater 'strategic rewards' were available? Some other reason?
